AD - GIFTED. It’s a bumper double review week! Please note, I received free tickets to both shows but my reviews remain impartial as always.
I always look forward to the new Open Air Theatre season with great excitement, so I headed to Twelfth Night on a very sunny evening with much optimism. After last year’s triumph La Cage aux Folles, and hearing its costume designer was back for this production, I was thrilled to see more beautiful clothing on display. If you’re a fan of Jean Paul Gaultier then you should see this show purely for Viola and Sebastian’s matching sailor-inspired outfit! I mean even the show poster looks like a fashion advert for the famed designer.
Unfortunately the costumes are probably the best part. I couldn’t help but feel something was lacking from this version of Shakespeare’s comedy of mistaken identity. The tone felt timid rather than comedic, although there were comedic moments and flashes of fun, inventive direction. The overall vision is what let it down. It was only after reading the note in the programme that I learnt what was trying to be achieved from this setting in a forgotten club in the Mediterranean, and the idea of ‘chosen family’ just didn’t quite shine through.
Music was added into the piece with a small band of players, but it seemed to slow the pace rather than add anything. At 2 hours and 40 minutes, there are times the action really drags. That’s not for the cast’s lack of trying though. There are excellent performances from Matthew Spencer and Raphael Bushay in particular.
Those deep into the study of queer relationships in Shakespeare’s works will likely gain an awful lot from the new direction here, but to a standard audience it just doesn’t quite grab the attention. However I’ll never begrudge a nice evening spent watching a play under the setting sun of Regent’s Park! If you want to check out the show, it runs until 8 June. There are tickets available directly from just £15.
In equally hopeful spirits, I headed to the tour of Jesus Christ Superstar at the New Wimbledon Theatre earlier this week. This production originally started life at the Open Air Theatre too, and it’s definitely my favourite of theirs to date. It’s been a good few years since I saw it last, and I was apprehensive that it might not translate to an indoor stage. Although at times it feels cramped and lacks the space that the ensemble had to breathe in the park, it still packs an emotional punch.
It is immediately atmospheric - you can hear a pin drop in the audience throughout. The highly stylised choreographed staging might not be for everyone, but I actually feel it’s the perfect way to tell the story. The manic blind following of Jesus is excellently represented through frenetic movements that build, gaining dancers as Jesus gained traction before his death. The vision does occasionally fall into style over substance - sometimes the direction overlooks important lines that beg for emphasis and attention. But as a piece its visually stunning.
The music is equally fantastic, and I love how the rock elements are woven into the set, props and costumes, from microphones on the priests’ staffs to leads being used as ropes. It’s hard to pick people out of a truly talented overall cast, but Ian McIntosh has to be the best Jesus I’ve seen in the role. You are spoilt with the amount of gorgeous rock voices in this production.
Jesus Christ Superstar is at the New Wimbledon Theatre until18 May, with tickets available from £13. There are still plenty of stops left on the tour too!
Happy ticket-buying!
